JUNIOR CHORAL SCHOLAR APPLICATIONS
Shallaway Youth Choir, as part of its educational vision, is active in the development of young choral educators. Each year choral scholarships are awarded to promising young conductors for mentored study and development.
Applications are now open for the 2024-25 season for Junior Choral Scholar positions. This year, our Scholar Program will be specifically involved with our Jubilate (Jr High) Ensemble. Scholars will engage in a range of activities that support both the musical and administrative needs of the choir.
We welcome applications from individuals of all backgrounds, and you do not need to have been a member of Shallaway Youth Choir in the past to apply.
Qualifications:
We seek motivated, enthusiastic, and energetic individuals who have demonstrated leadership experience. Previous volunteer experience is an asset, as is having Standard First Aid & CPR certification.
Application Process:
To apply, please submit a letter of application that includes:
- Your experiences with children, particularly in musical and educational settings.
- The strengths and skills you would bring to Shallaway Youth Choir.
- The role you envision playing in rehearsals and the overall administration of the choir.
- Your expectations for this experience.
Additionally, provide the names and contact information of two references who can speak to your suitability for this position.
Important Considerations:
- The 2024-25 season will run from September 2024 to June 2025, encompassing rehearsals, concerts, workshops, camps, a provincial tour, and special events.
- Applicants should consider their availability for weekly rehearsals. Specific rehearsal days and times will be communicated to successful candidates.

Program Responsibilities:
Weekly Rehearsals:
- Rehearsal Set Up (in conjunction with choristers who arrive early):
- Arrive 30 minutes before rehearsal.
- Set up the room according to the seating plan.
- Help younger choristers find their places and ensure they are ready 15 minutes before the rehearsal begins.
- Rehearsal Support:
- Assist in leading warm-ups and opening routines, in consultation with the conductor and choral scholar.
- Sit with the choir to provide musical support and guidance.
- Offer social support and encouragement to choristers as needed.
- Lead musical activities, sectional rehearsals, and theory/sight-reading exercises in collaboration with conductors.
- Lead choral music in collaboration with and under the guidance of the director.
Concert Responsibilities:
- Support all rehearsals, dress rehearsals, and concerts for the assigned ensemble.
- Help create and manage concert seating plans.
- Take on supervisory and/or performing roles as needed during performances.
- Arrive 45 minutes before the concert and stay afterward for preparation or discussions.
Overall Responsibilities:
- Attend all rehearsals, camps, events, tours, and performances for the designated group, and inform the office in advance if unable to attend.
- Assist the registrar where required.
- Learn all music assigned to the designated group.
- Participate in all tours for the designated group.
- Report any issues or concerns to the director as needed.
