Shallaway Youth Choir, as part of its educational vision, is active in the development of young choral educators. Each year choral scholarships are awarded to promising young conductors for mentored study and development. 

Applications are now open for the 2026-27 season for Choral Scholar and Choral Mentor positions. Scholars and Mentors will engage in a range of activities that support both the musical and administrative needs of the choir.

We welcome applications from individuals of all backgrounds, and you do not need to have been a member of Shallaway Youth Choir in the past to apply.

Choral Scholar

 

Role Summary:
The Choral Scholar is a para-professional, mentored position designed to support one Shallaway ensemble through rehearsals, sectionals, and event planning, while receiving guided mentorship from the Artistic Team. Scholars play a vital role in shaping the musical and organizational life of the choir.

Reports To: Assigned Conductor and Artistic Director
Time Commitment: Full season (September–May)
Compensation: Travel expenses for tour covered

Key Responsibilities:

• Arrive 30 minutes early to assist with rehearsal setup
• Set up and tidy rehearsal room before and after each session
• Assist with weekly rehearsals for assigned ensemble
• Lead sectionals and support chorister musical development
• Attend and assist with choir events, concerts, and retreats
• Contribute to planning and logistics under staff guidance
• Participate in scholar development and training sessions
• Serve as a positive role model and ambassador for Shallaway

Choral Mentor

 

Role Summary:
Choral Mentors are Shallaway alumni currently enrolled in post-secondary education who return to support youth ensembles as leaders and role models. Mentors assist conductors during rehearsals and retreats while fostering a strong sense of community among younger choristers.

Reports To: Ensemble Conductor
Time Commitment: Term or full season
Compensation: Tuition waived; responsible only for travel-related costs

Key Responsibilities:

• Arrive 15 minutes early to assist with rehearsal setup
• Set up and tidy rehearsal room before and after each session
• Attend weekly rehearsals, retreats, and performances
• Assist with sectionals and chorister support
• Serve as a role model for ensemble members
• Help facilitate mentorship and community-building activities
• Collaborate with conductors and staff as needed

Qualifications:

We seek motivated, enthusiastic, and energetic individuals who have demonstrated leadership experience. Previous volunteer experience is an asset, as is having Standard First Aid & CPR certification.

Important Considerations:

• The 2026-27 season will run from September 2026 to June 2027, encompassing rehearsals, concerts, workshops, camps, tours, and special events.
• Applicants should consider their availability for weekly rehearsals. Specific rehearsal days and times will be communicated to successful candidates.
