Anna Mercer

CHORAL SCHOLAR

Anna Mercer is a 20-year old soprano from Coley’s Point, NL. She is currently studying voice at the MUN School of Music under the tutelage of Jane Leibel. As part of her studies, she is very active in the choral community and in 2019 accepted the position of Choral Scholar with Shallaway Youth Choir. In this role Anna is mentored in the art of choral conducting by Artistic Director Kellie Walsh.

Most recently, Anna was awarded the Ivan Palmer Award in Choral Music in 2021 from the MUN School of Music. In 2018, Anna founded and was the conductor of ​Storm Jib​ - a choir for ages 3 to 10, which focuses solely on authentic NL folk music and the music of Indigenous Peoples. Anna was awarded a grant by the ​Bruneau Centre for Excellence in Choral Music​ for her outstanding educational work with ​Storm Jib​.

Alongside her work in choral music, Anna is an accomplished soprano with countless performances under her belt. In 2019, Anna was awarded Debut Atlantic’s prestigious Award for Music Excellence and as part of this honour, she travelled to PEI and performed at the Indian River Music Festival. In the summer of 2020, Anna was invited to perform at the Barachois Festival where she performed four pieces as part of their online festival. In both 2017 and 2018, Anna attended the Vocal Technique Workshop in St. Andrews, NB where she studied with Wendy Nielsen. Along with other awards and scholarships, she won the Carbonear Kiwanis Jr. Rose Bowl in 2015 and 2017. In 2018 she won the Carbonear Senior Bowl, the Provincial Music Festival and competed in the National Music Festival in Sackville, NB.
